The Philippine Eagle

India Ink Etching print by CC Wari

The Philippine Eagle is a magnificent and remarkable species and is considered by many to be the largest eagle in the world. It is on the IUCN RED list as critically endangered with diminishing numbers. The Philippine Eagle hunts monkeys in the disappearing jungles of the Philippines. This beautiful print of an India Ink etching reveals the exorbitant rich feathers that make this creature's crown something befitting a king of all the jungle species.

This work by CC Wari beautifully captures why the Philippine Eagle is the national bird of the Philippines with its formidable stare and impressive appearance. CC demonstrates the ability to peer into the souls of her subjects and bring them into expression through her dramatic line work and delicate etching techniques.  This highly detailed work is considered by the artist to be more freeform than her other works. “The spirit of this particular Eagle was unlike anything I had experienced before. It’s wild untamed nature took my breath away particularly knowing that it faces a predicted extinction in the next 50 to 80 years,”

Artist remarks on the etching process:
“India ink etchings involve a rather laborious and often difficult medium to work with, particularly when attempting to create a larger work of art. The medium is severely unforgiving to mistakes. It can be fabulously frustrating at times and fabulously rewarding if patience and a steady hand and eye prevails.”  CC Wari

India ink etchings start with a thin pure white layer of kaolin clay layered onto a heavy paper or Masonite board that is then covered with black India ink. The ink is etched away revealing the clay layer beneath it and thus revealing the subject matter.  The India ink is removed using fine knives or even hypodermic needles to etch fine lines from the ink thus revealing the image or subject matter. Larger etchings can take weeks or even months to create.  CC Wari demonstrates a masterful control of this process in her etchings which is why her works are so highly sought after.  Her original artworks demonstrate precise line work, delicate cross-hatching, and stippling to build form, depth, and texture and obtain detail that is unmatched in the world of India ink etchings.   This creates an almost photographic level of attention to detail while capturing the soul and spirit of her subject matter.  CC Wari’s brilliant use of the dramatic monochrome technique conveys each of her subjects with a unique majesty and grandeur all their own.
They make a highly valued addition to any art collection, home or business.
