This oil painting by Kathy Wipfler beautifully celebrates the elegance and power of the Aplomado Falcon.
This unique and colorful falcon is threatened in many of its native environments, which is why The Peregrine Fund has concentrated much of its conservation efforts on helping to restore this species to healthy, viable numbers.
The Aplomado falcon may be the most colorful of the falcons, and Wipfler beautifully depicts this in her scene of an Aplomado and its recent acquisition of a mouse. Through her use of color and tonal range, Wipfler invites the viewer into a simple but focused desert scene. The falcon’s perch is typical of it’s native arid, cliff side, Southwest habitat.
Wipfler’s delicate brushwork reveals intricate feather detail and bold barring that richly adorns the exquisite raptor. The falcon is triumphant and yet stoic, confident and assured.
