Female Bald Eagle

India Ink Etching by CC Wari

Artwork Description:
The female bald eagle depicted in this CC Wari etching is the mate to the male also available in print. CC photographed the two of them while on a trip to Alaska and etched this dramatic image in the 1980’s. The two originals were sold to a healing center in Australia shortly after completion and greet patrons in the entrance to the facility.

CC’s work evokes an almost sculptural presence that feels both majestic and intensely alive. Her detail shines through in this breathtaking work of our national symbol.

This powerful, high-contrast monochrome etching is rendered in dramatic black and white. The eagle’s head is turned to the right, creating a dynamic sense of alertness and intensity. The solid black background makes the eagle appear almost sculptural, emerging from the darkness with luminous white highlights giving it an intimate majestic presence.

Crisp white feathers cover the head and neck, with delicate, individual strands meticulously etched to show texture and direction of growth. The eagles eye looks into the viewer with piercing intensity. The transition from the snowy-white head to the dark body is dramatic. Deep velvety blacks of the india ink marry with intricate white etching that creates the illusion of layered feathers — you can see the fine barbules and the way light would catch on individual plumes. The shoulder feathers have a slightly ruffled, three-dimensional quality thanks to careful cross-hatching and stippling.

CC Wari demonstrates masterful control of India ink etching (or scratchboard-style technique). CC Wari is an etching master using precise line work, delicate cross-hatching, and stippling to build form, depth, and texture. Highlights are achieved by etching the black ink away revealing the white clay of the specially prepared paper. CC takes the utmost care to define shadows and detail that are second to none in their ability to obtain texture and depth. This creates an almost photographic level of attention to detail. The lighting is dramatic and directional.  This chiaroscuro effect gives the eagle a monumental, almost mythic presence.

The piece conveys strength, vigilance, and quiet power. There’s a sense of timeless dignity in the eagle’s pose and gaze — it feels both noble and slightly intimidating. The stark black-and-white palette strips away any distraction, forcing the viewer to focus purely on form, texture, and character.

Paired with her mate, they make a striking addition to any home or place of business.
