India Ink Etching by CC Wari
The male bald eagle depicted in this CC Wari etching is the mate to the female also available in print. CC photographed the two of them while on a trip to Alaska and etched this dramatic image in the 1980’s. The two originals were sold to a healing center in Australia shortly after completion and greet patrons in the entrance to the facility. CC’s work evokes an almost sculptural presence that feels both majestic and intensely alive.
This striking monochrome portrait presents the eagle in a commanding, three-quarter profile view. The bald eagle’s head is rendered with brilliant white feathers that glow against the black void. Fine, delicate etching captures the soft, layered texture of the head and neck plumage. The body and wing area are rich with intricate feather detail: individual barbs and overlapping plumes are created through precise cross-hatching, stippling, and directional line work. This gives the dark plumage incredible texture and depth — you can almost feel the soft yet powerful structure of the feathers. CC Wari demonstrates exceptional control in her etchings. Her work relies on careful removal of ink to reveal the white clay lining beneath the ink surface. She builds form through layered lines using fine knives and even hypodermic needles to obtain detail that is unmatched in the world of India ink etchings.
This piece captures the bald eagle’s iconic spirit: strength, freedom, and sharp-eyed awareness. The eagle appears alert and proud, as if surveying its domain. It’s a classic wildlife portrait elevated through exceptional draftsmanship and dramatic presentation.
